Success Thought of the Day – 6/27/18: Leading direction

A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be. - Rosalynn Carter.

Leading direction is a critical skill that we all must attain.  Some may argue that it is only necessary for those wishing to be in a “leadership position.”  However, we must consider that leading direction starts with ourselves.   Yes, we first must be able to lead ourselves in such a manner that people desire to follow us, irrespective of title or position.

Have you ever heard the phrase “we are always being watched?”   We are natural observers as people, listening to what people say, but also watching what they actually do.

Leading requires the ability to establish a vision of the desired end state – – for yourself, your team and/or an organization.  That vision becomes the compass and helps the leader guide, discerning between wants and needs and at times, consensus building towards something that may be counter to the vision.
