While there are a number of things to consider when dealing with an obstacle, one piece of advice stands above the rest.  Assess the situation and then choose your response.

Rushing in, social splattering or walking away too quickly each could result in regret.  Take the opportunity to assess (size up the situation, weigh the pros and cons and develop a set of options) and then choose from the options.
