Hey family. In my latest episode of The Corelink Solution Show, I explore the art of job hunting, offering tips and insights that I’ve gathered over the years. I’m James Rosseau, Sr., AKA Trig, and I’d like to share with you key strategies that can make your job search more effective and less stressful.
The Power of Networking
One of the most critical aspects of job hunting that I cannot stress enough is networking. Did you know that a staggering 85% of jobs are filled through networking? This statistic alone should be a wake-up call for anyone who’s been relying solely on sending out resumes. Networking is about building and nurturing professional relationships that can open doors to opportunities that might not even be advertised.
I’ve seen firsthand how a warm introduction, or a personal recommendation can make all the difference. In my experience in hiring and leadership roles, I’ve always given more weight to candidates who come through a trusted connection. It’s not just about who you know, but who knows you and can vouch for your abilities and character.
The Resume Black Hole
Let’s talk about resumes for a moment. It’s disheartening to learn that 75% of resumes are rejected before they even reach the hiring manager. This is often due to automated screening systems that filter out applicants based on keywords and criteria. So, how do you get past this barrier? Again, it comes down to networking. Leveraging personal connections can help you bypass the resume black hole and get your foot in the door.
The Importance of Work Experience
Another key insight I share in this episode is the value of work experience. A whopping 90% of employers look for candidates with relevant work experience. This doesn’t mean you need to have years of experience in one specific role; rather, it’s about the diversity of your experiences and what you’ve learned from them. Every job teaches you something valuable, and it’s crucial to articulate how these experiences have prepared you for the role you’re seeking.
Defining Your Job Search Goals
Clarity is your ally in the job search process. It’s essential to have a clear understanding of what you’re looking for, whether it’s a job that aligns with your passion and purpose, offers a higher income, gets you into a particular industry, or helps you develop specific skills. Be open to experimentation and embrace the learning that comes with new opportunities.
Tapping Into Your Network
I can’t emphasize enough the importance of tapping into your network. Engage in meaningful conversations, build genuine relationships, and remember that networking is a two-way street. It’s not just about what you can get from others but also what you can offer. This reciprocal approach builds trust and can lead to unexpected opportunities.
Staying Employed While You Search
A piece of advice I always give is to maintain your current job while searching for a new one. Employers often prefer candidates who are already employed, as it suggests stability and continuous professional engagement. Of course, there are exceptions, but if you can, hold onto your job until you’ve secured the next one.
A Tribute to Teachers
In this episode, I also take a moment to express my deep appreciation for teachers. They play a pivotal role in shaping young minds and, despite being underpaid and under-resourced, their contribution to society is immeasurable. It’s important that we recognize and support our educators, as they are the architects of our future.
Final Thoughts
To all the job seekers out there, remember that your journey is unique. The insights and advice I’ve shared are meant to guide you, but it’s your personal drive, resilience, and willingness to learn that will ultimately lead you to success. Networking, work experience, and clarity in your job search goals are your tools to navigate the job market. Use them wisely, and you’ll find that the path to your dream job is within reach.
