Success Thought of the Day – 1/20/21

Management works in the system. Leadership works on the system. -Stephen R. Covey

Good systems allow processes to flow.  They have some common characteristics such as clarity of roles, defined leading indicators and success metrics, and low error rates – – with an eye towards best in class.  The stewards of those systems spend most of their time with their people, coaching and working on the system to tweak and innovate for continuous improvement.

Conversely, when working “in” the system, there is a lack of flow.  Some common characteristics are continual production intervention, higher error rates, and lower quartile competitive scores (if known).   Those managers are often spending their time running to, and fro, and unfortunately, coaching is typically an afterthought as time is not afforded.
