When To Apply For Internships (+3 Do’s To Rock Your Application)
As a college student, when to apply for an internship depends on the internship itself.
The fall semester brings with it new beginnings, a new homework load, and the constant pressure of deadlines and the future.
No matter where you are in your college experience, putting your best foot forward is always on top of mind, and never has that been more true than when looking for your first job.
Unfortunately, according to a Higher Ed Dive, over half of hiring managers surveyed said college graduates are not prepared for the workforce.
Which means it’s crucial for you to land internships to gain experience and help you stand out among your peers.
When should you apply for internships?
As soon as possible.
Although summer internships are the most coveted, internships are available all year round, coinciding with college semesters.
For those of you specifically looking for summer internships, however, applications usually open in late fall or early winter. Now is the time to keep an eye on social media platforms like LinkedIn and Handshake to stay on top of those due dates. If you have a specific company in mind, make sure to also visit their sites and social media accounts for internship announcements.
Pro tips for applying for internships
- Submit early. Just like you, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of college students applying for a very limited number of seats. Submit your application at least three months in advance of the due date to increase the chances that it will be seen.
- Tailor your resume to the application. Much like your first job, your internship application should highlight practical skills that will make you a perfect fit for the position. Look for keywords in the top internship description and include those in your resume.
- Consider pre-internships. A pre-internship is a project-based position within a company. These are short-term and can fit easily into your semester’s workload. Although it’s not a full internship, it will still provide you with the experience you’re looking for.
What not to do when applying for internships?
You don’t know what you don’t know, and in this particular instance, it could cost you a great opportunity. So here is what not to do when applying for internships.
- Do not wait until the last minute. Remember, there are only a limited number of seats, so don’t procrastinate on this.
- Do not forget to clean up your social media. Employers will absolutely review all your social media accounts to ensure you’re the right fit for them. Before you apply, take down any posts, reels, or comments that may reflect negatively on you.
- Do not cast a short net. Due to the limited number of internships available in your field, securing one may be challenging. But try your hand at internships in other fields! This will expand your interests and teach you transferable skills that you can use in the future.
