Success Thought of the Day – 6/28/18: Law of Association

"You will become like the five people you associate with the most. This can be either a blessing or a curse." --Billy Cox

The law of association is amazingly powerful.  In my summary around Promise #1, embracing your passion, one of the four key points includes seeking out partners.  In other words, people who we are going to share our journey with towards our passion, purpose or cause with.  These people become trusted advisors and people you can count on as we make our way through the journey.

Taking a step back and thinking more casually about this, we might think, “I do not necessarily need everyone to be a passion partner per say, some folks are just friends,” and that is very true.  However, the principle still applies.

Just earlier this week I had the opportunity to visit with some great friends, Billy Dexter (partner at Heidrick and Struggles) and Melissa Wilson (owner of Networlding), discussing their book, Making Your Net Work: Mastering the Art and Science of Career and Business Networking, for an upcoming project I’m working on (hint :)).  Within it, Melissa makes the specific point that we should be spending 80% of our relationship building time with our primary circle.  The “Circle of Ten” as she calls it.

As with most things, time is a limited resource.   Be purposeful and intentional in its use, including whom you use it with.
